Tableau Acquires MIT Spinoff Empirical Systems.

July 12, 2018 - Tableau Software has announced the acquisition of Empirical Systems, a company spun out of MIT in 2016. The company had originated in the MIT Probabilistic Computing Project, where they seek to build “a new generation of probabilistic computing systems that integrate probability and randomness into the basic building blocks of software and hardware.” The company’s goal was to use machine learning (ML) to improve embedded analytics within larger systems.

I’ve previously pointed out how machine learning is beginning to leverage parts of artificial intelligence (AI) and business intelligence (BI), and the recently announced acquisition by Tableau is evidence of the evolution of the industry.

As such, Empirical Systems’ acquisition makes perfect sense from the Tableau standpoint. The purpose of BI is to provide analytics for improved business decision making. Its code base is more deterministic, with algorithms coded into Tableau’s systems. While these algorithms are constantly becoming more complex, and are successfully discovering new relationships, the promise of ML is that a system can learn new relationships that don’t fit within the pre-defined algorithms, providing customers with even more capacity to discover those relationships and improve business decision making.

Expect more acquisitions of fledgling machine learning firms by the wider business software community, not just within the BI space.
